Religious Education Overview

Confirmation 2014

THE GOAL OF PARISH RELIGIOUS EDUCATION:

  • To help students grow in faith: to assist them in developing and nurturing their personal relationship with God.
  • To help students become part of the Catholic Christian community of believers by forming significant relationships in faith as well as by taking part in the sacraments of initiation:  Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist.
  • To help students acquire a Catholic identity, a Catholic way of looking at the world through a network of shared meanings.  This involves the teaching of Catholic doctrine, prayers, scripture stories, and practices.  (The New Catechist Handbook)

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES

Classes are provided for children from the age of four through grade twelve.  To fully prepare our children to live a Catholic life, it is expected that children attend classes every year throughout their childhood and teen years.  For more information about the 2013-2014 class schedule, see the Religious Education Schedule.

All adults who work with children and minors must complete a training course and background screening.  We adhere to all the Policies and Guildelines of the Diocese to ensure a safe environment for children and minors.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CURRICULUM

This year we are using the Be My Disciples curriculum from RCL Benzinger for all K-6th grade non-sacramental classes.  For more information about the curriculum, see RCL Benzinger.

SACRAMENTS

Two-year sacrament classes for First Communion and Confirmation begin each year.  It is required that students participate consistently in preparation for receiving these sacraments.

"Catechesis aims to bring about in the believer an ever more mature faith in Jesus Christ, a deeper knowledge and love of his person and message, and a firm commitment to follow him."  (National Directory of Catechesis)
