Thrift Shoppe History

"Ye Olde Catholic Thrift Shoppe"

Ye Olde Catholic Thrift Shoppe opened in May of 1997.  The original store was a two story 1,000 sq. ft. house on Main Street next to the cemetery. After renting this house for 6 months we moved to 76 E. Center Street and rented a number of the suites in the commercial center. We, Christ the King parish, now own the commercial center! Originally known as Pioneer Square the center is in the heart of downtown Cedar City and is approximately 10,000 sq. ft.

Today there are approximately 85 different people working at the store during a month. More than a majority of the workers are volunteers. In the past 2 years we needed to make two positions paid. The workers who receive and sort all incoming merchandise. The position of Store Director has recently become paid job. The revenue from the store goes directly to the Christ the King Building Fund. Our parish must meet the needs of our current and future faith community. The success of this project is revealed by the “Burning of the Mortgage” on Phase 1 (church, administrative offices, and six classrooms) in November of 2006.

Our store serves the needs of the community at large and is supported by donation from all areas of the community. We are involved with assisting the poor through the Iron County Care & Share department and we offer items at reasonable prices to those who are in need as well as those who want a bargain.

Due to its growth and popularity within the community we always need help. The store is open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. However, you will find a parishioner at the store working every day of the week and at every hour of the day. The variety of work involves, pricing and displaying items for sale in the store, washing small and large items as they are donated to the store, restocking merchandise, keeping the store tidy, doing pick ups and deliveries using the Thrift Shoppe truck...the jobs are truly varied and unending.

If you want to find a way to meet other parishioners this is the place. It is a terrific team effort and we have a great deal of FUN working at the store. Everyone is an asset and each has had an impact on how well the store is doing today. For more information or to volunteer, please call 865-9674 or drop by the store on a Wednesday between 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM.

Our Mission Statement:
“The story of building this Thrift Shoppe is really the process of forming a loving and caring community, one that mirrors and reflects the love of Jesus for us and from us to all with whom we work and meet. In the operation of our thrift store, this will be our process; this will be our goal.”
